Which one....
Ubuntu Server, Red Hat, CentOS, Windows Server
I just don't know which one to use
Web - Linux, unless you want to run everything yourself and make it user-friendly.
In-house for file sharing, using a domain, DHCP, DNS, hosting a Windows application - Windows.
A web host that's offered you a choice between Windows & Linux - Linux. You'll be using a web-based GUI so you can leave the complicated stuff to the hosts.
I don't get paid to know the answer, therefore I'm far more likely to give you a straight and honest answer.
personal use i would suggest windows (if on your own pc), if youre selecting a server online i would go w/ linux. Youll have a whole options screen that will let you do everything w/ ease.
How easy it is it to run a linux server at home but connect to it with a windows machine on a windows network?
If you've got no/little experience with Linux and you try connecting a Linux box to a Windows domain without following guidelines, forget it. No unless there's a Linux version that will properly do it for you.

I'd say for most effective and lowest cost go with CentOS if you want file/printer sharing with it you can install Samba. In general if you're a windows user it will benefit you using linux and learning with it. Otherwise if you can afford it and want defacto simplicity of Windows wack on Windows server 2008 R2 or 2003 depending on needs and hardware.
