Has Chat Really Died

Over the year I've run servers both from home and hosted, By far hosted servers are well worth the money (next to staminus and azure) lol. Residential connections just are not stable enough for irc servers to be run from. Back the first time I had a hosted server i was paying over 200 a month for it. Now you can get a server with 20x the power for 1/4 of the price.

No chat hasn't died, it just depends on what server your on.If your and IRC chatter well the servers are all up and running and huge amounts of ppl on them, if were talking about people designing there chat like Buzzen or MSN yes there dying as a lot just cannot be bothered with the downtime the issues and etc. I have seen more and more going back to orignal IRC servers and just getting use to that. with mibbit and all the other software that enables you to chat better in IRC servers its a huge win. Other then that chat is chat. Now if your talking about scripting yes that has died and keeps fading and fading more and more as the years move on.

got a question what you guys think of atheme or should stick with anope?

All depends services are pretty much a personal preference and really now adays depends on what you want the services to do, do you want them to integrate nickserv with your sites database, then anope over atheme. Atheme does have some advantages over anope and vice versa. Myself i've personally used anope for years and trust it and wont switch from it.

ok cool thanks I stick with anope :P

ok looked into your idea about ircd shell account and made my moved $9 a month that all it cost me $9 max to 800 users but I get to 500 users I simply change to the next package which is 1000+ users but even that is only $14

eh? chat isn't dead.. the question is did egos die?

Chat is not dead.. sure social network has done a lot to it.. but the egos that run a network is what kills it..

From my point of view, Most chat sites offer the kinda of same thing, chat rooms, groups, forums, Chat isn't dead i don't think, But chat company's should think outside of the box by offering services other services don't, Such like Facebook, Facebook is good, but not that good in my eyes,

Facebook? only retards are"family" type people use Facebook, i think it's boring and stupid . and un "chat" related. but could Incorporate music, videos and skype better though.

This will sound weird especially considering I am a web designer and I work on buzzen's website. This is only my opinion from how I view chat networks. Who cares about the blogs, music, videos etc. You have real time chat that you can share links to everything on the web. You can talk about any subject under the sun again in "real time". Why would you want to stop watching chat to go to all those things when you are on that website for the real time chat. I can understand profiles. People want a glimpse into the person they are talking to. Pics , about me, etc I get. To me all the extras on a chat website are just there when the chat you enjoy is a bit slow and you are passing the time. The more you can include into the actual chatroom experience is where I think more networks should focus. Even Buzzen. The rest is just extras in my opinion that don't really matter. It's good if you have them but if you don't it's not going to stop people from using your chat if that's where the people are they want to talk to. There are tons of social networks out there. What chat offers people is real time interaction with lots of users from all over the world. This brings you different cultures, races, sexes, etc all in one place in real time. It's not about having to include people into your circle. The circle is 100% open to anyone that wants to come in. That's what I love about chat. I am a mIRC user. The website extras are irrelevant to me. I just want the real time interactions.

Please don't take all of that to mean I'm somehow dissing people that are adding all the bells and whistles to their website. As a designer I'm constantly adding things to websites and I enjoy when people use them. I'm just saying people aren't coming to chat networks for "facebook", billboard top 100, blogs, etc. They are coming for the real time chat. Focus on that above all else. You are lucky if 10% will use the other features. Good chat gui and a good profile system is really all you need. Even then it's hard to build a network from nothing into anything of substance anymore. People tend to stay where they are accustomed to. Again this is only my opinion of how I see chat.

Is chat dying? I dunno the answer to that. For me I still see a lot of people in chat. I don't see chat growing like it once did but that tends to happen when such well known companies as microsoft and yahoo close their chats. Everyone knew msn and yahoo. So when you saw free chat on their pages you clicked. Chat networks aren't getting the advertising like that anymore. You can't reach hundred's of thousands of people like msn and yahoo did. The largest networks are the plain jane IRC networks that n00bs will never go to. There are a lot of geeks out there to use those networks but those same geeks can start their own. n00bs need their hands held and walked through every aspect of chat and it has to be made with them in mind. IRC elitists don't like n00bs. But that is the majority of the market. If you can figure out how to get them to your network on the scale of hundreds of thousands chat would be popular like before. Good luck figuring out how though.

I just think someone needs to come up with a great idea that's chat related that doesn't count on other social media sites. like categories for instance. why doesn't someone come up with a news bar or something that's related to that category.. so like if you're in a sport cat it'll give you sports news on a bar, sorta like what you see during football games or fox news or cnn etc.. but for each category you are in. and more mobile access. costume icon support, webcams (even though it's been done) if chat wants to live it needs to change. and these radio sites could be added in more into chat, request bar etc right in the room you're in. maybe even texting a phone from your chat account or anything.. chat needs to change or it WILL DIE. 1,000 users in a chat isn't a lot for how many people there is online everyday. if the flowerheads at Facebook can come up wit that lame shit why can't use chatters lol

Zan as usual you're making very little sense

all the bells in whistles don't really seem to matter. It's about getting users. Which means you need massive advertising. Which is the hardest thing to do. MSN didn't have a lot of bells and whistles. It had a decent webchat. To go along with that it had a HUGE userbase and advertising platform. as i said before all the extras are good if you have them but they won't make or break you.

 I have been away from the internet for a month or two and I took a look in Buzzen the other day and there site is looking good  ... I have looked at a few of the other chat networks that I used and there seems to be no progress and yet they are asking for donations  ? what has happened to Sparkpea ... that used to be a close 2nd to Buzzen a few years ago but looking at there site now it looks like its on its knees ? or maybe I am wrong  no Christmas theme like it had a few years ago ... such a shame I loved to chat in there ... before I go I would like to say I like the new look err0r of tg007 and by the way if you see OZZY tell him a happy new year from Johnson :D and the same to you err0r :D

Not really sure what is going on with sparkpea.. They don't seem to have an active developer at least from what I can see. They maybe doing something behind the scenes I don't know.

Buzzen is set to release an updated webchat soon.

Pk has a ton of options in his chat.

Oasiz has a neat old school msn theme.

Haven't heard much about the other networks.

good to see you johnson.
