I've been unsure of the difference between irc, ircx and irc could anyone explain the difference? Does one support more then the other?

IRCx was developed by Microsoft. Many of our users used MSN chat in the past.

Net-bits.net has built IRCwx which has many of the features of MSN chat.

IRCd is more commonly used and has tons of features and addons.
